Is it true that if Allah wills good for a servant, He sends an angel to him in his final days to guide him, lead him aright, correct him, and set him straight, so that he dies in the best of states? And if He wills ill for him, He sends a devil to mislead him and lead him astray, so that he dies in the worst of states?

The report was narrated by Al-Daylami, Ibn Abi Shaybah, and Al-Bayhaqi with different wordings. Among what was reported from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, is that she said: "Indeed, when Allah intends good for His servant, He appoints an angel for him a year before his death, who guides him and makes things easy for him until he dies, being in the best state he has ever been. When death approaches and he sees his reward in Paradise, he begins to feel his soul convulsing, wishing it would depart. At that point, he loves meeting Allah, and Allah loves meeting him. And when He intends evil for a servant, He appoints a devil for him a year before his death, who obstructs him, misguides him, and tempts him until he dies, being in the worst state he has ever been. When death approaches and he sees his punishment in Hellfire, he begins to feel his soul gulping, wishing it would not depart. At that point, he dislikes meeting Allah, and Allah dislikes meeting him." It is not possible to definitively confirm the authenticity of this report or its weakness.
