The answer

The fasting of Dawud (peace be upon him) is the best form of fasting, as he used to fast one day and break his fast the next. It is the most beloved fasting to Allah. This preference is absolute, and for this reason, it is better to break one's fast on a day when fasting is sunnah (such as Mondays and Thursdays or the white days) if it coincides with a non-fasting day in the fast of Dawud. Emulating the fasting of Dawud does not contradict emulating the Prophet (peace be upon him), because the Prophet (peace be upon him) found it desirable and encouraged it. He (peace be upon him) was commanded to emulate the previous prophets, including Dawud (peace be upon him), as stated in the verse: "Those are the ones whom Allah has guided; so follow their guidance."
