The question

What is the ruling on a livestock merchant selling sheep that he bought, some for 150 Riyals and others for 200 Riyals, then he wanted to sell them together in the same market and at the same hour, so he set their price at 175 Riyals and awaited bids, knowing that livestock markets rely on bidding?

The answer

If a merchant buys sheep and takes possession of them, it is permissible for him to sell them, even if he has not removed them from the market, based on the hadith: "Whoever buys food, let him not sell it until he has taken full possession of it." Possession and seizure are valid either by vacating the place or by moving the commodity to a place where the seller has no exclusive control. As for selling livestock through auction, there is no harm in it, according to the conditions mentioned in the relevant fatwas.
