What is the ruling on the widespread musical ringtones for mobile phones that are heard in mosques?

Using musical ringtones for mobile phones is forbidden (haram (definition)). It becomes even more reprehensible and forbidden in mosques, because it is an open declaration of something forbidden in a virtuous place, increasing the sin of its owner. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, explicitly stated the prohibition of musical instruments (ma'azif), which produce musical sounds. These mobile phones contain such sounds that repeat with every call, disturb worshippers, and raise the voice of falsehood in the houses of Allah. Those who do this must fear their Lord, repent, and change this objectionable practice, especially since a permissible alternative is available. It is necessary to mute or turn off the phone's ringer before entering the mosque, even if the sound is permissible, to prevent disturbing worshippers.
