The answer

Reciting "Sami' Allahu liman hamidah" (Allah hears those who praise Him) and "Rabbana wa lakal-hamd" (Our Lord, to You be all praise) is a recommended according to the majority of scholars and obligatory according to the Hanbalis. An individual performing prayer alone combines both. The Imam combines both according to the Shafi'is and Hanbalis, and this is the preferred view. A congregant (ma'mum) recites only "Rabbana wa lakal-hamd" according to the majority of scholars, and this is the preferred view.
