Linguistically, necessity (ḍarūra) is an intense need that cannot be repelled. Jurists have defined it as a person reaching a point where, if they do not partake of the forbidden, they would perish or come close to it. This permits the consumption of what is otherwise unlawful.

One must be cautious not to be lenient in falling into forbidden acts under the claim of necessity, for the rule "necessities permit prohibitions" is restricted by the rule "necessity is estimated according to its extent," based on the Almighty’s saying: "But whoever is forced, neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him." So, whoever exceeds the extent of the necessity has sinned.
