What is the ruling on relatives, friends, and loved ones paying for funeral expenses on behalf of the deceased?

The expenses for the funeral of the deceased are taken from the deceased's wealth, preceding all other rights connected to the inheritance. If a person voluntarily pays for them, there is no objection to that, provided the heirs accept. Scholars have differed regarding the wife: are these expenses to be taken from her wealth or from her husband's wealth? The majority opinion is that they are taken from her wealth. However, the Hanafis, Malikis, and Shafi'is hold that they are the responsibility of the husband. If the deceased had no wealth, then the expenses fall upon whoever was obligated to provide for their maintenance during their lifetime. If no such person exists, then they are taken from the public treasury (Bayt al-Mal). If there is no standing public treasury or it contains nothing, then they fall upon any Muslim who is aware of the situation and is capable of bearing the cost.
