Covenants are of two types:

The first: That which necessitates expiation (kaffarah), and this is when an oath is intended regarding doing or refraining from something.

The second: That which does not necessitate expiation, and this is the binding legal contract between two parties or a general covenant for the people, and it is not permissible to break it, as Allah Almighty says: ﴿And do not break oaths after their confirmation, while you have made Allah a guarantor over you.﴾ And whoever breaks it will be resurrected as a betrayer.
