What is entailed by performing 'Umrah during menstruation out of ignorance of the ruling, and is a make-up or expiation required after repeating the 'Umrah in a state of purity?

A menstruating woman is not permitted to enter the Sacred Mosque (Masjid al-Haram) nor circumambulate the Kaaba.

If a woman circumambulates while menstruating, her circumambulation is invalid, and her 'Umrah is not complete. She remains in a state of ihram, and the first 'Umrah performed thereafter is considered a completion of the corrupted 'Umrah.

If a marriage contract is solemnized while she is in ihram, the marriage contract is invalid and must be redone.

If intercourse occurs before the completion of the first 'Umrah, the 'Umrah is invalidated, and she must perform it again with the intention of making up for it (qada'). She also owes a fidyah (expiatory sacrifice) of a sheep, which must be slaughtered and distributed among the poor of the Haram.

Scholars have issued fatwas stating that the circumambulation of a menstruating woman is invalid, and that she must return to complete the 'Umrah. If her husband has intercourse with her, she owes a "dam" (blood sacrifice) and a new 'Umrah from the miqat.

If she performed another 'Umrah afterwards without intending it as a make-up, the first 'Umrah remains her responsibility until she makes it up.
