What is the ruling on perfumes that contain alcohol?

Scholars have differed on the ruling regarding the use of alcoholic perfumes due to their disagreement on whether alcohol is intoxicating and impure (najis) or not. The more preponderant opinion is that the alcohol found in perfumes is intoxicating and impure, as is every liquid intoxicant, based on the Almighty's saying: "O you who have believed, indeed intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid them that you may succeed." Accordingly, the preponderant opinion is that it is not permissible to use perfumes containing alcohol due to their impurity, unless they undergo a complete transformation (istihalah). Touching alcohol does not invalidate ablution (wudu'), but it is not permissible for one who has used it to pray, as it is impure, and the purity of the body, place, and garment is a condition for the validity of prayer.
