What is the ruling on the owner of a shisha shop selling the remaining stock and goods to pay off debts before permanently closing the shop and traveling, and what is the ruling on the money earned from this trade being used to build a house and buy land, knowing that he is the sole provider for his family?
It is not permissible to sell the remaining hookah and cigarette products to settle debts, because their price is unlawful money. If there is other permissible money, the debts should be settled with it. Otherwise, there is no harm in delaying the settlement until permissible money becomes available, as Allah Almighty says: "And if there is one in [financial] difficulty, then [let there be] postponement until [a time of] ease." As for what was acquired previously from selling these items without knowledge of their prohibition, there is no prohibition in benefiting from it, based on the statement of Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah that money acquired through interpretation, imitation, or a previous fatwa does not need to be relinquished, even if its error becomes apparent later.
