Does a person's endeavor to attend Friday prayer become invalidated and his prayer nullified if he speaks after the second Adhan or during the Khutbah, whether he is at home or in the mosque? And does the endeavor of one who returns the greeting of peace to someone entering the mosque during the Khutbah become invalidated, or of one who speaks on his way to the mosque if someone asks him about something?

Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on speaking during the khutbah (sermon). Some obligate listening attentively for those who are seated in the mosque or its courtyards, while others hold that speaking outside the mosque is not forbidden if the speaker is not the one behind whom they will pray. There is also a view among the Shafi'is that attentive listening is not obligatory, and speaking is not forbidden. As for initiating a greeting (salam) during the khutbah, it is disliked, and there is a difference of opinion regarding returning the greeting. Engaging in idle talk during the khutbah does not invalidate the Friday prayer, but it diminishes the reward.
