Is the one who abandates the Sunnah punished?

The Sunnah is that for which the doer is rewarded and the one who leaves it is not punished. This is agreed upon by scholars. This is indicated by the hadith of the man who asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, about the laws of Islam. He mentioned to him the pillars and the obligatory duties. The man said: "By Allah, I will not add to this nor decrease from it." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He has succeeded if he is truthful." Although a Muslim succeeds by performing the obligatory duties, his continued abandonment of the Sunnah and recommended acts is inappropriate, because the Sunnah compensates for any deficiency that may occur in the performance of the obligatory duties. Al-Nawawi said: "Indeed, his persistence in abandoning the Sunnah is blameworthy, and his testimony may be rejected because of it, but he is not disobedient; rather, he is successful and prosperous."
