Is there a fatwa that clarifies whether compensation received from insurance companies or any other party is permissible (halal) or forbidden (haram)?

If a person is obligated to pay a sum of money for insurance, he should not take more than he paid when receiving compensation, because by doing so, he is recovering what was taken from him through a void contract.
