Is the expiation for marital intimacy on one day during Ramadan sixty days of fasting, or two days of fasting out of the sixty days? And what is the ruling on breaking the fast for more than one day during Ramadan?

For one who intentionally engages in intercourse during the daylight hours of Ramadan, without coercion or ignorance, repentance, making up the fast (qada'), and a severe expiation (kaffarah (definition) mughallazah) are required, which involves fasting for two consecutive months.

As for one who breaks the fast by means other than intercourse, such as intentionally eating or drinking, there is no expiation required according to the most preponderant opinion (al-rajih (definition)). Rather, only making up the fast (qada') and repentance are required, along with the agreement that this is one of the major sins.
