What must a widow do and what must she refrain from doing after the the death of her husband?

The woman whose husband has died must remain in her home for the duration of the 'iddah (waiting period), which is four months and ten days, or until she gives birth if she is pregnant. She should not leave except out of necessity or dire need. She must refrain from wearing beautiful clothes, jewelry, perfume, kohl, and anything that falls under the category of adornment. It is permissible for her to walk barefoot or with shoes, attend to her needs within her home, speak with whomever she wishes without suspicion, and shake hands with women and her maharim (unmarriageable kin). There is no harm in alluding to a marriage proposal without explicitly stating it.
