Previous fatwas have been issued regarding the ruling on trading in shares and establishing controls for it that apply anywhere. The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has issued a fatwa stating: 'It is not permissible to deal in the buying and selling of shares of companies that engage in usury, whether giving or taking, or that sell prohibited items such as pork, alcohol, and the like, or that operate in commercial insurance, due to the presence of gharar (excessive uncertainty), jahalah (ignorance), and riba (usury) therein.'"
