The answer

Abandoning one's wife for years is impermissible and constitutes a grave sin, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) sayings: "It is sufficient sin for a man to neglect those whom he is responsible to feed," and "It is sufficient sin for a man to withhold from those whose sustenance he possesses." Such abandonment is an injustice to the wife and an infringement upon her rights if she is not disobedient. The husband must cease this behavior and adhere to what Allah has commanded: "Then, either keep her in fairness or release her with kindness." If he is unable to treat her kindly and fulfill her rights regarding companionship, maintenance, clothing, and housing, then he must release her with kindness, and divorce may be preferable in this situation.
