Is the repentance of a young man who became committed [to religious observance] after the death of his grandmother considered an ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah) for her, and is his use of her belongings for worship, such as her prayer rug and her clock for waking up for Fajr prayer, considered an ongoing charity for her?

The grandmother receives no reward for the repentance, as she did not cause it; rather, her death served as an admonition towards repentance. As for the belongings she left behind that can be used in acts of obedience, they are the property of her heirs, and it is not permissible to use them except with their permission. It is hoped that this will be an ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah) for her if used in obedience. The questioner must offer sincere repentance, remain steadfast in obedience, increase in supererogatory acts of worship, make up for intentionally missed prayers, increase in seeking forgiveness, adhere to gatherings of remembrance (dhikr) and knowledge, and keep company with the righteous.
