The answer

Backbiting is a reprehensible trait forbidden by the Quran and , and many scholars have counted it among the major sins. Backbiting is only permissible for a commendable purpose, such as vetting and validating narrators, or clarifying the state of those who openly commit sin, or seeking one's right from another through the ruler or judge, or for someone consulted in such matters. However, if it is intended for defamation or to attack a person's honor out of malice, this is not permissible and repentance from it is immediately obligatory.
