What is the punishment for someone who drinks alcohol, and is it permissible for them to pray and fast?

Allah has forbidden intoxicants in the Qur’an and Sunnah, considering them an abomination from the work of Satan. There are also hadiths warning against drinking them and promising that whoever drinks them will be deprived of intoxicants in the Hereafter if they do not repent. They also state that intoxicants are a cause for Allah’s curse upon their drinker and those who deal in them, and that whoever drinks them will have their prayers rejected for forty days, meaning they will not be rewarded for them.

The punishment for drinking intoxicants in this world is flogging. Jurists have differed on the number of lashes, ranging between forty and eighty. The opinion of the majority of scholars has settled on eighty lashes for a free person and forty for others.

A person who drinks intoxicants must perform prayers and fast during their prescribed times. It is not permissible for them to abandon acts of obedience due to committing a sin. Rather, they should strive to abandon major sins and transgressions.
