The person who caused the accident is obligated to pay expiation (kaffarah (definition)) and blood money (diyah) if it was due to their excessive speed or poor tires that they did not replace. If the driver did not cause the accident, for example, if they were driving at a moderate speed and their tires were sound, then nothing is required of them. The expiation is the freeing of a believing slave; if one is unable to do so, then fasting for two consecutive months.
