What is the ruling on a wealthy woman adopting a child or a person and giving him her surname or naming him "Goodwill Ambassador for Human Protection"?

Islam has forbidden adoption because it entails attributing a child to other than his father, and this necessitates the inheritance or bequeathing of someone who is not an heir or legator by religious law, the forbidden degree of kinship for those who are not mahram, and falsehood. Allah the Almighty said: "Call them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah." And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Any woman who introduces someone to a people who is not of them, then she is not from Allah in anything and Allah will not admit her into Paradise."

This does not mean that foundlings and orphans should be left without care. Rather, the Sharia has encouraged their sponsorship, made it desirable, and promised a great reward for it. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I and the sponsor of an orphan will be in Paradise like this," and he gestured with his index and middle fingers, separating them slightly. A foundling is in greater need of sponsorship than an orphan.
