Is it permissible for a Muslim husband to stipulate to his Christian wife that she wear the niqab, leave the church and her job, cut off communication with her family, and wear what he specifies, while obliging her to say that the wife must be obedient and have no personal opinion? And is it true that a Muslim man's marriage to a non-virgin woman (who has committed fornication) is impermissible?
First, it is not permissible for a Muslim to take disbelievers as friends, due to the affection inherent in friendship, and we have been forbidden from showing such affection towards those who disbelieve in God. However, this does not mean that one should not show kindness and do good to them, especially with the intention of inviting them to Islam.
Second, God has permitted marriage to chaste women from among the People of the Book, even if they had previously committed fornication, provided they have repented and resolved to abandon it.
Third, both the husband and wife are obligated to obey God. The husband may prevent his wife from disobeying God, such as by neglecting the hijab. He may also prevent her from working if he provides for her financially. However, he may not prevent his wife from visiting her family and speaking with them, except for a legitimate Shar'i reason.
Fourth, men have guardianship over women, but this does not mean nullifying her opinion. Indeed, it is authentically reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, consulted his wife on a grave matter. Marital life should be built upon obedience to God, mutual understanding, and living together in a good and honorable way.
