The question

What is the ruling on a wife who spoke with a male relative, agreed with him to marry, and asked her husband for a divorce, then met with him and went out with him, and invited him for a meal in her family's house without her husband's knowledge, and should the husband keep her if she repents after the matter is uncovered, and what is her appropriate punishment from Allah?

The answer

What the wife did by contacting a non-mahram man and planning to marry him while she is already married, and what the man did by corrupting her against her husband, are forbidden evils that necessitate repentance. If the wife repents with sincere repentance and her sincerity becomes evident, it is preferable for the husband to forgive her and conceal her sin, based on the Almighty's saying: "And to pardon is nearer to righteousness," and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever conceals a Muslim, Allah will conceal him in this world and the Hereafter." However, if her repentance and remorse are not apparent, it is not advisable to keep her. Her punishment with Allah depends on her repentance, for Allah is the Forgiver of sin, the Acceptor of repentance, and the Severe in punishment.
