What are the rulings concerning the deceased?

For the deceased, there are rulings that begin at the time of death throes. The dying person is prompted to say the Shahada (testimony of faith), turned towards the Qibla, and enjoined to be patient and have a good opinion of Allah. After death, their eyes are closed, their joints are softened, and their jaw is bound. Then, their preparation is expedited, including washing, shrouding, praying over, and burying them, as well as hastening the repayment of their debts. After burial, prayers are offered for their steadfastness and forgiveness, and their will is executed. It is recommended to offer condolences to the deceased's family and to prepare food for them, and to forbid them from wailing. Also, establishing mourning gatherings (ma'atim) and banquets is prohibited, and it is disliked to mention the deceased's shortcomings or to revile them.
