What are the boundaries of the mosque that prohibit selling in its courtyard?

The boundaries of a mosque are defined by its surrounding structure, whether it be built of stone, wood, reeds, or similar materials. This defined area is what falls under the rulings of a mosque, such as the prohibition of selling within it, and the prevention of menstruating women, women in postnatal bleeding, and those in a state of ritual impurity (junub) from staying therein. As for its courtyard (rahaba) and open area (fina'), they do not fall within its boundaries nor do they take on the rulings of the mosque; thus, what is permissible outside the mosque is permissible within them.
