Is there any evidence from the Quran or Sunnah that prohibits a man from piercing his left ear, and what if this act is common and accepted in the society he lives in?

The basic ruling for piercing the ear is impermissibility due to the torment it involves. However, it has been permitted for women due to their need for beautification. It is not permissible to pierce the ear of a boy or a man, because it involves torment without need, and because it entails imitating women, and the one who does so is cursed by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The prevalence of an act in a particular country does not indicate its permissibility.
