The answer

This hadith was narrated by Muslim from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw a delay among his Companions and said: "(Come forward and complete the rows with me, and let those behind you follow your lead. A group of people will continue to lag behind until Allah holds them back)."

Its meaning is that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded his Companions to advance to the first row so that they might follow his lead, and so that those behind them might follow their lead. It is also possible that the intention was for the Ummah to follow their example, as they transmitted the description of the Prophet's prayer.

And his saying: "(A group of people will continue to lag behind until Allah holds them back)" means that whoever habitually delays from the first rows may be punished by Allah holding him back from His mercy, or His Paradise, or His great bounty, or elevation in status, or knowledge. The hadith can be interpreted to encompass all these meanings.

The hadith encourages praying in the first row or the first few rows, and condemns the habit of praying in the back rows.
