Is the husband's consent a condition for breastfeeding a young child?

A child must be breastfed as long as they are of breastfeeding age. The Shafi'is and Hanbalis hold that the father is obligated to arrange for his child to be breastfed, and it is not obligatory upon the mother, unless the mother is the only option, or the child refuses the breast of anyone else, or neither the father nor the child has financial means. The Malikis hold that breastfeeding is obligatory upon the mother without compensation if she is of those who breastfeed.

The majority of jurists agree that if a mother wishes to breastfeed her child, she must be enabled to do so. The husband's consent or permission is not required for the wife to breastfeed their child, based on the verse: "No mother should be harmed through her child," and because she is more compassionate towards the child. As for a mother breastfeeding her child from a husband other than her own, or a foreign child, the husband's permission is required, unless the mother is the only one available for breastfeeding, or she made it a condition with her second husband and he agreed.
