Is my salary and work permissible or impermissible in a company that manufactures and exports raw materials for perfumes, deals with usurious banks, pays gratuities to facilitate work, deals with taxes, has statues and pictures in its headquarters, whose owner does not pray and curses religion, and which offers gifts of perfume bottles to governmental bodies?

Working for a company that manufactures and exports raw materials for perfumes is permissible in principle, unless the person's own work is forbidden. Thus, it is forbidden for him to deposit money in usurious banks, or to withdraw interest from them, or to record usury; because those who deal in usury and those who assist them have been cursed. Similarly, it is forbidden to pay bribes that invalidate a right or establish a falsehood. However, if they are paid to avert harm or obtain a right, the sin is on the receiver (murtashi) not the payer (rashi), if it becomes the only means to do so. As for taxes, paying some of them is permissible while paying others is forbidden. If the owner of the company does not pray or commits major sins, or if the company contains statues and pictures, his sin is upon him, not on the worker. The Muslim is obliged to advise, enjoin good, and forbid evil to the best of his ability.
