The answer

If a man contracts marriage with a woman and delays consummation due to his own reasons, while the woman has offered herself and is ready for consummation, then her maintenance (nafaqa) becomes obligatory upon him, even if she is residing with her family. This is the view held by the majority of jurists. If you both agreed upon a specific period for consummation and you exceeded it due to your work circumstances, then her maintenance becomes obligatory upon you from the moment this period is exceeded. Gifts can be considered part of the obligatory maintenance, and if the wife waives her right to the remainder, there is no sin. The husband should not be excessive with gifts to avoid arousing the jealousy of his first wife.
