The answer

Scholars deduce that the Day of Judgment spans fifty thousand years from the Almighty's saying: ﴿The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.﴾ [Al-Ma'arij: 4], and from what Muslim narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). As for the fact that the reckoning does not encompass the entirety of this day, but rather people enter their abodes in Paradise or Hell before even half of it has passed, this is indicated by the Almighty's saying: ﴿The companions of Paradise that Day will have the best lodging and best place of rest.﴾ [Al-Furqan: 24], and what Abu Ya'la and Al-Hakim narrated on the authority of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). This long day will be made easy for the believers.
