Is it permissible for a husband to divorce his wife—after attempts to reconcile her—despite his father's objection?
The father's right is great, and obeying him is obligatory, but it is within what is recognized as good. If there is harm to you from the wife's continued presence, then it is not obligatory to obey the father in retaining her, and there is no sin in divorcing her. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah stated that it is not permissible for parents to force their child to marry someone they do not desire. However, one should not resort to divorce except after exhausting all attempts at reconciliation, because it fragments the family and has psychological and social harms. One must also be patient and overlook some matters, and look at the good aspects of the other party's character, for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Let no believing man hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another." And love is not a condition for the stability of married life; Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, built households on care and commitment, not solely on love.
