What is the ruling on money resulting from the sale of musical tapes after repentance, and is it permissible to use it in a halal project?
If the intention is to sell forbidden music tapes, then the money earned from them is unlawful, because the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Allah cursed the Jews for when fat was forbidden to them, they sold it and consumed its price. And indeed, when Allah, the Most Honored, the Most Majestic, forbids the eating of something, He also forbids its price." This money must be disposed of by spending it on charitable causes. It is not permissible to benefit from it unless the earner is poor and has no other money to meet his needs; in this case, he is allowed to take from it according to his need. Indeed, he may even use it as capital for a lawful business, to the extent of his need. Some scholars view that such money is lawful for its earner if he was ignorant of its prohibition, but the majority of scholars hold that it is not lawful for him unless he is poor.
