The dowry is an exclusive right of the daughter. The father is not permitted to take from it, or from his daughter's wealth, except with her consent or due to his need, provided that he does not harm her. The father must consider his daughter's best interest and not be obstinate regarding the marriage conditions; otherwise, he would be a 'adil (one who prevents his female charge from marrying). The daughter has the right to explain to him what she considers rightful and lawful, and to defend herself from harm.
