What is the ruling on the amount paid to the bank in exchange for settling a usurious loan, and what must be done to rid oneself of the sin of dealing in usury?
Borrowing with interest is the very essence of usury (riba), and a severe warning has been revealed concerning it from Allah the Almighty and His Messenger, peace be upon him. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, cursed the one who consumes usury, the one who gives it, its scribe, and its two witnesses. A single dirham of usury is worse than thirty-six acts of fornication. Usury is not permissible unless a person's situation reaches the point of perishing or near perishing, and they cannot find lawful means to avert this necessity. Otherwise, repentance, regret, seeking forgiveness, and returning the borrowed money without interest are obligatory. Allah the Almighty accepts the repentance of whoever repents from usury.
