The answer

A wife's request for divorce without a valid reason is forbidden in Islamic law, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Any woman who asks her husband for divorce without any [valid] cause, the scent of Paradise will be forbidden to her." This is unless she is unable to fulfill her responsibilities as a wife. She must be reminded of the gravity of destroying the marital life and that Iblis rejoices in such acts. If the wife insists on divorce and the husband agrees without compensation, he must fulfill all her rights, unless she voluntarily waives something. It is permissible for the husband to refuse to divorce her until she ransoms herself from him with money, as long as she is the one seeking separation without him having caused her harm.
