What is the ruling on reciting the opening Takbir before the supplication of Al-Tawajjuh, given that it is commonly known to be recited after it?

The Sunnah for the opening supplication (Du'a al-Istiftah) is to recite it after the takbirat al-ihram, not before it. This is based on what Muslim and Abu Dawud narrated from Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: "When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood for prayer, he would say Allahu Akbar and then say: 'I have turned my face sincerely to the One who originated the heavens and the earth...' " [and so on]. And what Muslim narrated from Abu Hurairah, who said: "When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said Allahu Akbar in prayer, he would remain silent for a short while before reciting. So I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you, what do you say during your silence between the takbir and the recitation?' He said: 'I say: O Allah, distance me from my sins as You have distanced the East from the West...' " [and so on]. This is the view of the majority of scholars who affirm the desirability of the opening supplication.
