What is the ruling of Islam on the contemporary hijab?

A Muslim woman must cover her entire body, based on Allah's saying: "O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful," and His saying: "And not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof; and to draw their headcovers over their chests." Thus, the legal hijab (definition) is that which covers the entire body, is not descriptive (tight), and is not transparent, regardless of time or place. As for thin or tight abayas that reveal the body's features, they are not considered a legal hijab; rather, they are a following of fashion and desire, and a Muslim woman should not go out wearing them.
