What is the ruling on keeping a dog for guarding purposes, knowing that the need for its guarding is not urgent, and does its presence diminish the reward daily?

The majority of scholars are of the opinion that selling dogs is absolutely forbidden, while others permit the buying and selling of dogs whose ownership is allowed, such as hunting dogs. This latter view is the more apparent one, but it is safer to generally avoid selling them. It is not permissible to own dogs in Islam except for hunting or guarding. Whoever acquires a dog for any other purpose will have two qiraats deducted from their deeds every day. If there is no dire need for the dog, it should be given away to someone who needs it, with the recommendation to avoid keeping it inside the house.
