The answer

Cash (Naqd) is subject to Zakat if it reaches the nisab (minimum threshold) and a hawl (one lunar year) passes over it, whether it is saved or invested throughout the hawl. The nisab for cash is equivalent to 595 grams of silver or 85 grams of gold, and the obligatory Zakat is a quarter of a tenth (2.5%). Zakat is due on the entire amount, and the method of calculating it is by paying a quarter of a tenth from the remaining amount after each hawl passes.
