Is it permissible for one who belongs to the Household of the Prophet (Ahl al-Bayt) to receive from zakat funds, and is it permissible to spend them on things other than food and drink?

The Household of the Prophet (peace be upon him) are permitted to receive zakat if they are not given their due from the Muslim treasury. Once they receive zakat, they own it and may dispose of it as they wish in permissible matters, such as eating, drinking, and other things. The proof for this is that the Prophet (peace be upon him) ate from meat that Barirah had given as charity, and he said: "It is charity for her, and a gift for us," which indicates that whoever lawfully acquires money owns it and is allowed to dispose of it.
