What is the ruling on an Islamic bank taking a return in exchange for rescheduling the debts of clients who are delinquent in paying their Murabaha installments?
Source: FtawySummarized from the full answer at Ftawy · imported Sep 2, 2026
It is not permissible to add any excess or increment to the original debt due to rescheduling debts and overdue installments. This is the usury (riba) of Jahiliyyah, which is forbidden. If the debtor is in hardship, then he must be given respite, as Allah Almighty says: "And if there is one in hardship, then [let there be] postponement until [a time of] ease." And if he is affluent, then he must repay his debt, and it is not permissible for him to procrastinate. The bank has the right to take the money from him by force, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The procrastination of the rich is injustice."
