How can one honor a father characterized by injustice, mistreatment, psychological weakness, who involves strangers in his household's private matters, fails to fulfill his responsibilities towards his children financially and morally, and has reached the point of mocking and insulting them in front of others?
If the father is abusive to his children and curses the religion, then cursing the religion is disbelief and neglecting the children is a grave sin. However, mediating for reconciliation between spouses is not forbidden if it adheres to legitimate Islamic guidelines. Regardless of the father's condition, his injustice, and his abuse, his right to dutifulness and companionship with kindness does not fall away. For Allah has commanded companionship with parents with kindness, even if they are polytheists who command polytheism.
Therefore, one must be dutiful to the father and not disobey him. And among the greatest acts of dutifulness are advising him, enjoining him to what is right, and forbidding him from what is wrong with gentleness and politeness. It is not permissible to abandon parents, no matter their condition. Rather, one must visit them, care for them, advise them, and be kind to them, just as Abraham (peace be upon him) did with his polytheist father. For the rights of parents are great, and dutifulness to them is one of the most important duties. One must seek help from whoever is available to guide them to good.
Likewise, it is not permissible for children to abandon their father or disobey him, no matter how much he abuses or commits sins. Rather, they must pray for his guidance and advise him always, for the dutifulness of children may be a cause for the parents' righteousness.
