Will the doomed sects mentioned in the Hadith, "My Ummah will divide into seventy-three doomed sects, save one," abide eternally in Hellfire, or will they be punished and then transfer to Paradise?

Followers of misguided sects attributed to Islam are not disbelievers unless they harbor disbelief, and the ultimate destination of those among them who die adhering to monotheism is Paradise. Scholars have differed in identifying the doomed sects. Some have considered the roots of innovations (bid'ah) to be four: the Rawafid (Shi'a), the Khawarij, the Qadariyah, and the Murji'ah, and they excluded the Jahmiyyah from the Ummah, while others included them among the seventy-two sects. Shaykh al-Islam holds that the Salaf and the Imams did not declare the Murji'ah and the preferred Shi'a to be disbelievers, and that declaring all people of innovation to be disbelievers is a mistake according to the madhhab (definition) of Ahmad and the Sharia (definition). Rather, they are to be treated like those who commit sins and the transgressors.
