Is there any religious evidence in the Qur’an or Sunnah specifying the mourning period as three days?

The Quran and Sunnah (definition) do not specify a duration for offering condolences (ta'ziyah). However, the majority of jurists have set it at three days, based on the hadith (definition) concerning mourning (ihdad): "It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person for more than three [days], except for her husband, [for whom she mourns] four months and ten [days]." Offering condolences after this period is disliked as it renews grief, unless it is for someone who was absent, or if the one offering condolences has not yet met the bereaved. Some jurists, however, hold that there is no specific time limit for offering condolences at all.
