A number of jurists have permitted offering the funeral prayer for a deceased person who is absent from the city, provided that the duration of his absence does not exceed one month. However, if the deceased is in the same city, it is permissible for anyone who did not pray over him to pray at his grave, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did when he prayed at a fresh grave and prayed at the grave of the woman who used to clean the mosque.
