Is it permissible to play video games if they do not contain any prohibitions, such as football?

Islam has permitted recreation and amusement, provided they adhere to the following Sharia (definition) guidelines: that they do not distract from the remembrance of Allah and prayer; that they are not accompanied by gambling or games of chance; that they do not lead to disputes or fanaticism; and that they are not accompanied by music or other prohibited things. Furthermore, recreation should be in activities that offer demonstrable lawful benefit, such as mental or physical exercise, or acquiring useful knowledge. If these guidelines are met in video games, then playing them is permissible; otherwise, it is not.
