Are visions and dreams—whether good or evil, and whether related to this world or the hereafter—considered an unalterable decree (al-qada' al-mubram) or a suspended decree (al-qada' al-mu'allaq)? Can their evil be averted? And how did the Companions supplicate for wretchedness to be turned into happiness, when it is an unalterable decree?

Visions and their relation to Allah's divine decree (Qada') and destiny (Qadar (definition)): Decree is of two types: Mubram (unalterable), which is recorded in the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz) and does not change; and Mu'allaq (contingent), which is recorded in the scrolls of the angels and may change by Allah's permission. To this, the supplication is attributed: "O Allah, if You have written me as wretched, then erase that and write me as سعيدا (blessed/happy)."

There is no way for a servant to know the divine decree before it occurs. Therefore, one must take the necessary means and supplicate.

Whoever sees something disliked in a dream should spit dryly to their left three times, seek refuge with Allah from Satan, and not narrate it to anyone. It will not harm them, by Allah's permission, because it is from Satan. For added safety, it is recommended to turn to the other side and pray two rak'ahs.

Delving deeply into questions about divine decree is blameworthy, and one should instead occupy oneself with what is beneficial.
